Overview
Most sleep apps fail at habit retention: users track once, then churn. SlumberPal was designed to make returning at bedtime feel useful and emotionally rewarding.
I led product design for the onboarding framework, time-aware home experience, sleep/nap session flows, PAL assistant patterns, and outcome review loops.
The Problem
The major frictions were weak emotional connection, static dashboards regardless of time context, and delayed abstract feedback that arrives after the action window closes.
The challenge was not only tracking sleep. It was creating a product users intentionally return to during the exact moments they need support.
“The goal was to design for the right moment, not just design a better chart.”
Approach
Onboarding was sequenced to earn trust first, then set behavior: profile confidence, companion choice, goal setup, sleep obstacles, and tracking permissions.
The home experience was made time-aware, with morning, afternoon, evening, and late-night states using different tone, CTAs, and guidance.
The companion and PAL coach were designed as accountability systems that become more useful with actual usage data.

Overview
Solution
The product offers structured audio selection, timed session controls, and clear post-session review prompts to close the loop immediately.
Sprout wellness metrics and streak framing created a care-based accountability mechanic that avoided guilt-heavy messaging.
PAL evolves from guided prompts in empty state to behavior-aware advice after tracking data is available, ensuring relevance and trust.
Context Over Static UX
Different times of day require different framing and actions to maintain habit adherence.
Accountability Without Nagging
Companion-based motivation improved emotional continuity better than reminders alone.

Data and Insights
Sleep insights were structured around patterns users can act on: completion calendars, bedtime windows, trend summaries, and nap metrics across selected periods.
Achievements were tied to consistency milestones to reinforce repeat behavior without overwhelming the interface.

Reflection
In a saturated sleep category, tracking is table stakes. Differentiation comes from feeling context-aware, supportive, and worth returning to at vulnerable moments.
Introducing companion logic before strict target framing helped users emotionally commit before performance pressure appeared.

SPND
SPND is a personal finance app built around a single belief: money anxiety is usually a clarity problem, not an income problem. The product introduced a bucket-based model that separates total balance from safe-to-spend money in real time.
